Horse Production and Management

Course Objectives:
This upper level course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage horses. Topics discussed in this course will include: anatomy, conformation/evaluation, heath and diseases, nutrition, reproduction, behavior, genetics and exercise physiology. Because this is not an introductory course, basic equine knowledge will be assumed. If you have no prior equine knowledge or experience, please contact me for further assistance with activities and concepts.

There is no required textbook for this course. However, the following sources are recommended for those seeking more information:

  • Informative handouts from class

Laboratory:
Labs will be held at the Livestock Instructional Arena on South Milledge, the Synder barn on Barnett Shoals or the main classroom. Location for the weekly lab will be announced in class each Monday. Therefore, if you miss class on Monday do not assume that the lab schedule is correct. Most labs will include hands on activities with horses, therefore please dress appropriately. Long pants and closed toe shoes (preferably boots) are recommended. Attendance is highly recommended. Unannounced quizzes will be given during labs and no make-up quizzes will be given without an excused absence.

Grading:
Exam I - 15%
Exam II - 15%
Exam III - 15%
Final Exam - 20%
Class/Lab quizzes - 25%
Presentation/Projects - 10%

Exams will be predominately short answer and essay. Final exam will be comprehensive. Each exam will cover both lecture and laboratory material. There will be no make-up exams or quizzes without an excused absence.
